Why the words matter

In a US study, parents trusted a doctor less when the doctor expressed doubt directly than when the doctor described possible causes. In a UK study, more people preferred hearing about the uncertainty, even when it worried them. People want different amounts of detail.

A first explanation

A working diagnosis is the explanation the doctor thinks fits best today. New symptoms or a new examination can change it. In Sweden, healthcare staff must base their work on science and established clinical experience.

Could the pain come from muscles?

The doctor may have noticed tenderness or pain with a movement. Ask what points to the muscles. Tell the doctor what the pain stops you doing. Muscle pain can be intense.

Before you leave

Ask what the doctor expects to happen, who will contact whom and when. Agree on which changes would mean you should seek help sooner. Ask for the plan in writing if that helps.

How a conversation might sound

Patient
When you say it could be my muscles, do you understand how much it hurts?
Doctor
Yes. You said the pain wakes you up. I think it could come from the muscles, but I am still unsure of the cause. Let’s book a follow-up and talk about when you should seek help sooner.

A question to ask

What do you think is most likely, and when should we speak again?
