At a Swedish health centre
Taxes pay for much of Swedish healthcare. You may also pay a patient fee. If the doctor suggests waiting, ask for the medical reason and when to have a new assessment.
Buying an extra test
At some clinics people can buy an extra check. In one study in Germany and the Netherlands, about one in nine people who chose a commercial MRI and heart check were advised to have follow-up. The study could not show whether people lived longer or healthier lives.
How the clinic is paid
When Copenhagen family doctors began to receive extra payment for some services, they provided more of those services and made fewer referrals. This describes a change in the group. It does not tell us why a particular doctor ordered a test.
What the patient can afford
In a US insurance experiment, spending on care was lower when families had to pay a larger share. Some people can buy extra tests. For others the price can make it harder to seek needed care.
A question to ask
How could the test help me, and what would follow-up cost?
