What would we do with the result?
The doctor uses your story and the examination to decide what to check. New symptoms or a sign of serious illness can make a test important sooner. Ask what to watch for in your own case.
An example from back pain
In England, 421 people with low back pain lasting at least six weeks and no signs of serious spinal disease were allocated by chance to an X-ray or usual care. X-rays did not improve pain or everyday function in this group. Those who had X-rays were more satisfied after nine months.
A picture needs an explanation
A different study used MRI on 98 people without back pain. More than half had a bulging disc. The doctor needs to compare an image with your symptoms. An unexpected finding can lead to more visits, expense and worry.
A question to ask
Would the result change my care? When should we look at this again?
